This quilt draws from Adire, the indigo-dyed cloth made by Yoruba women in southwestern Nigeria through resist-dye techniques passed from mother to daughter. It connects this lineage of indigo knowledge to the history of denim in the antebellum South, once referred to as “Negro cloth” when used for enslaved labor. The work traces indigo as a shared thread between West African textile traditions and American material culture.
