TSUNAGU — Beyond the Wave Artist : Sachiko Sukegawa Inspired by Katsushika Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, this work reflects my fascination with his powerful compositions—the dynamic movement of the waves and the quiet, enduring presence of Mount Fuji. Using vintage Japanese kimono and obi textiles, I fold, layer, shape, and assemble the fabrics to reinterpret this iconic Japanese landscape through a contemporary three-dimensional form. These textiles were once worn and cherished. Each carries traces of another time—memories, traditions, and the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship. By transforming them into a new composition, I seek to connect the past with the present, tradition with contemporary expression, and one generation with the next. The powerful waves represent the constant movement of life and the passage of time, while Mount Fuji, standing quietly beyond them, symbolizes strength, permanence, and an enduring spirit.
