“The Middle” is part of my “Headless” series, which explores moments of mental absence. States in which the body and mind are no longer in the same place, where we let go of constant rational thinking and simply remain in the present moment. While working on this piece, I encountered a moth. It was an Elephant Hawk Moth, a symbol of transformation and change. This encounter shifted my perception of the work. “The Middle” represents a state of being in between, between holding on and moving forward, between presence and memory. The two headless figures are physically present, yet mentally detached. They represent the conscious enjoyment of a moment, a sense of closeness and lightness. “The Middle” reflects a summer that was unexpected.
