Gargoyles as an architectural feature serve no functional purpose besides adornment. Ironically, female gargoyles are not something I have personally seen much of. This painting is showcasing a female gargoyle, posed nude and faceless in a gothic setting. A woman’s place in the world has been debated through centuries, with a popular opinion being ornamental. The female gargoyle represents the perfect woman the female is expected to be—stoic and silent.
