Why did Jimmy Buffet reference the artist Grant Wood in his 1974 song "Life is Just a Tire Swing," included on Buffett's album "A1A."? In the 1970's, Jimmy Buffett survived a car crash near Peoria, Illinois. When he regained consciousness, he found himself surrounded by a farmer and his family who were attempting to help him. The accident inspired the following lyrics: "Then the other morning on some Illinois road I fell asleep at the wheel, But was quickly wakened up by a 'Ma Bell' telephone pole And a bunch of Grant Wood faces screaming, 'Is he still alive?' But through the window could see it hangin' from a tree, and I knew — I had survived." . The connection between Buffett and Grant Wood inspired me to create a parody of Grant Wood's iconic 1930 masterpiece "American Gothic." Wood’s painting was a tribute to the depression era American farmer. My painting, by contrast, features a smiling Jimmy Buffett in place of the stern-faced farmer. I placed a macaw parrot on his shoulder to symbolize the millions of Jimmy Buffet fans who refer to themselves as Parrotheads. I painted a guitar in place of the farmer’s pitchfork. I gave the gothic-style home a cheerful Key West yellow makeover, complete with palm trees in the background. I painted Key West roosters on the weathervane and the front porch to add to the tropical vibe. "Florida Gothic" celebrates the music and the joy Jimmy Buffett brought to so many.
