“Gele” is a Yoruba word for headwrap, a cultural object and personal archive. The act of folding and wrapping the gele to adorn oneself reveals the tension embedded within acts of beauty and presentation. By transforming Ghana Must Go bags into geles through folding, sequining, and the placement of blue painted figures at their center, the work reflects on how beauty can become a means of navigating and concealing the tensions of migrant experiences. The gele becomes a space where beauty and tension coexist, portraying resilience and how we negotiate migrant realities.
